Collation: [1-310 412 5-1210 1312 1410 1512 16-1910 208] (1/1 address to Pope Pius II, 1/3r text, 20/7r colophon, 20/7v blank, 20/8r register, 20/8v blank). 204 leaves. 33 lines. Type: 1:150G 2:103R. CONTEMPORARY ITALIAN ILLUMINATION with white-vine decoration: 8-line gold initial with extensions opening dedication and text, first text leaf with full border in three margins incorporating coat-of-arms, smaller initials in pink on gold ground or alternating in red or blue with penwork decoration, some contemporary ms. quiring preserved. (Spotting, minor marginal staining, light thumb-soiling in first few leaves, single marginal wormhole at beginning and end, illumination rubbed, marginal erasure on 17/4.) 18th-century vellum, flat spine lettered in gilt, sprinkled edges. Provenance: contemporary unidentified coat-of-arms and erased inscription, occasional marginal annotations in a humanistic hand -- S.A. Thompson Yates (bookplate).

FIRST EDITION, printed at one of the first presses at Rome. The printing shops of Sweynheym and Pannartz, Sixtus Riessinger and Ulrich Han were all established at around 1467. Han began his independent printing career with another work by the Dominican Cardinal, Johannes de Turrecremata, Meditationes, and he reprinted both editions a few years later.
