Opening paragraph and part of colophon printed in red, first two opening letters illuminated in gold and manuscript rubrication in red, blue and green by Graily Hewitt, 15 woodcuts by Charles Keates and William Hooper after Robert Catterson Smith, based on the 1497 edition. Contemporary vellum, gilt title on spine, original ties. Provenance: C.H. St. J. Hornby (tipped in letter and note to:) -- S.A. Thompson Yates.
PRESENTATION COPY TO S.A. THOMPSON YATES IN MINT CONDITION. The present volume of the Inferno is limited to 149 copies. Although the woodcuts are said to be based on the 1491 edition in two of the colophons, this is corrected to the 1497 edition in the bibliography. Hornby XIII.
