THE LAST AND MOST COMPLETE EDITION TO APPEAR IN THE AUTHOR’S LIFETIME. It contains 58 essays whereas the first edition of 1597 had numbered 10 and the 1612 edition 38. Appealing in their choice of subject, while stressing the contingency and instability of political affairs, Bacon knew the Essayes to be his most popular work; by the end of the 17th century twenty more editions had been published. This is the first issue, with Richard Whitaker’s name in the imprint. Gibson 13; Lowndes I, 94; STC 1147.
