BACON, Sir Francis (1561-1626). The Essayes or Counsels, Civill and Morall. Newly enlarged. London: John Haviland for Hanna Barret and Richard Whitaker, 1625.
4° (169 x 124mm). Text within double line rules. (Title restored with loss of outer rule and with some pen-and-ink facsimile elements, text margins close cut with loss to bottom rules, catch letters and words, some light waterstains, spots and soil marks, final leaf with long repaired tear into text causing losses to rules, without front blank.) Late 19th-century mottled calf gilt, spine richly tooled, gilt turn-ins and edges. Provenance: William Davenport (contemporary signature on V1r) – A.H. Bright (signed bibliographical pencil note on front pastedown).
THE LAST AND MOST COMPLETE EDITION TO APPEAR IN THE AUTHOR’S LIFETIME. It contains 58 essays whereas the first edition of 1597 had numbered 10 and the 1612 edition 38. Appealing in their choice of subject, while stressing the contingency and instability of political affairs, Bacon knew the Essayes to be his most popular work; by the end of the 17th century twenty more editions had been published.
