2° (312 x 195mm). Engraved frontispiece, woodcut device on title, folding letterpress table, woodcut initials on 2C1 recto and 2V1 recto. (Engraved frontispiece tipped in at inner margin, shorter at bottom margin and with deckle edges, marginal waterstaining to final 90 leaves and occasionally on others, few small stains.) Contemporary blind-stamped calf, new endpapers, marbled edges (rebacked and restored at corners, some scuffing). Provenance: unidentified inscription on endpaper and booksellers descriptions.
Third edition of the THE MOST IMPORTANT 17TH-CENTURY ENGLISH WORK OF POLITICAL PHILOSOPHY. A copy with large margins with p. 232 mis-numbered as 252. Written in the midst of the English Civil War, Leviathan sets out Hobbes's firm belief in the State as an aggregation of individual men submitting voluntarily for the good of the greater commonwealth in order to lift humankind out of anarchy. True to Hobbes's prediction, the originality and directness of his work exacerbated the divisions in a nation already torn, but it also brought many out of the 'darkness of ignorance'. Leviathan directly influenced theorists from Spinoza to Bentham. Macdonald & Hargreaves 44; Norman 1082 (first edition); PMM 138 (first edition).
