Lot Essay

The pose of Lucretia is related to that in a Saint Mary Magdalene penitent by the artist, formerly in a Saint Petersburg collection (confiscated and sold at Lepke, Berlin, 4-5 June 1929, lot 9; Bukowskis, Stockholm, 15-18 April 1970, lot 166).
