This folio and album contains sketches, worked up drawings and watercolours for the most part executed by Louis Haghe, P.R.I. (Tournai, Belgium 1806-1885 London). Haghe settled in England in 1823 where in 1830 he found a printing press which became one of the most famous early Victorian lithographic printers in London. The company, Days & Haghe, specialised in genre scenes, and architectural and topographical views. Between 1842-9 Day's and Haghe published David Robert's The Holy Land, Syria, Idumea, Arabia, Egypt & Nubia. Indeed many of the sheets offered here are intricately detailed pencil sketches of landscapes including views of Buckingham Palace and Windsor Castle which reflect the level of detail which would later make his print company such a success.
The folio offers an intriguing insight into the artistic career of Haghe and his brother Carl and also his friend, fellow artist and sometime collaborator, Louis Gallait (see lot 620).
Of note in the group are what appear to be several portrait and figural studies that seem to be preliminary studies for paintings, included in which is a study of an old man which relates to the finished watercolour of A study of an old man counting money which is offered as the second part of lot 624. Additionally there are several sketches which seem to have been taken from life of military figures and weaponry as well as destroyed buildings which could possibly relate to the Belgium Revolution of 1830-1839. Further, there are two early watercolours by Louis Haghe of Nieuwpoort, Belgium dating to the 1820s when he was still a young and unaccomplished artist before his move to England.
