Charles Allston Collins was the son of the artist William Collins, R.A., and brother of the author Wilkie Collins. He was part of the circle surrounding the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood and his style was heavily influenced by their work. From the 1850s he turned increasingly to writing, and in 1860 he married Charles Dickens's daughter Kate.
