This compass was made by one of two individuals named Elisha Baker living in Schroon, Essex County, New York during the nineteenth century. Like many of the town's early inhabitants, both appear to have hailed from Rhode Island. As indicated by their gravestones, the first was born in 1782, died in 1872 and is buried in the town's Baker Street Cemetery; the second was born in 1779, died in 1869 and is buried in the Severance Cemetery.
