Lot Essay

A sweeping view from the north of the famous Praya Grande, or main street of the waterfront at Macao, this lot depicts strollers in front of the grand houses and businesses that line the crescent-shaped bay. A bustling port since it became a Portuguese possession in the sixteenth century, Macao particularly prospered after 1757, when Western traders of all nations were allowed to reside in the city.
