Lot Essay

Henry Lerolle studied at Académie Suisse in the studio of Louis Lamothe. His work was exhibited at the Paris Salon from 1868 and throughout the 1870's and 1880's. He is known for painting the large murals in the Hotel de Ville, Paris. Besides his own painting, Lerolle was a a friend and collector of such artists as Degas, Denis, and Vuillard. Renoir painted portraits of Lerolle and his daughters, and Debussy dedicated piano works to Lerolle's daugher, Yvonne. Lerolle was made a Chevalier, Légion d'honneur in 1889. Another example of Lerolle's paintings is presented later in the auction.
