In the Ramayana, when Rama is exiled by his father from his kingdom of Ayodhya, he is joined by his wife Sita and brother Lakshmana. They make their way to Prayaga, where the Ganga and Jamuna rivers meet, and where they know Sage Bharadwaja will give them shelter along their journey. During their stay, the sage suggests they settle in Chitrakuta for their exile, and hence how Sita, Rama and Lakshmana find a place in which to make their home.
