Lot Essay

Yang Jisheng was a famous honorary jianchen official from present- day Hebei province. In the twenty-sixth year of the Jiaqing era, he became a jinshi official who oversaw military affairs. Due to his criticism of horse-trading practices, he was demoted. After his case was cleared, he became a civil official and eventually regained his position in the military department. Since one of his responsibilities was to oversee other officials, he filed a report describing the extreme corruption of a colleague, Nian Gao. Yang mysteriously passed away shortly thereafter. However, he was posthumously declared Zhong Ming, an honorary title for an especially loyal official who died fulfilling his duties to the emperor.
