Lot Essay

Hu Ruosi, also known as Qinren, Xiasi, and Xieyizhai, worked on China's first color film, Butterfly Lovers and painted landscape scenery for Mei Lanfang's opera sets. He was also a professor in the Fine Arts department of the Shanghai Theater Academy. An exceptional artist, Hu was especially fond of painting landscapes of Mount Huang. When he was only fifteen years old, his painting,Kuanglu Waterfall won a gold medal at the World's Fair in Belgium. Other famous landscapes by Hu Ruosi are displayed at the Jiangsu Provincial Museum, in the People's Great Hall, and at the Ziguang Pavilion at Zhongnanhai.
