A LARGE AND RARE GILT-BRONZE FIGURE OF GUANYIN
17TH-18TH CENTURY
The bodhisattva is shown seated in lalitasana, with the right foot supported on a lotus stem that projects from the front of the double-lotus base, and with a child seated on the left knee. The left hand, which rests on the edge of the base, holds one of the two stems that rise to the shoulders from the sides of the base, while the right hand holds a pearl between the thumb and middle fingers. The graceful figure wears an elegant dhoti, a goat pelt on the right shoulder, beaded necklaces, armlets, large circular earrings, and a ribbon-tied tiara centered by a seated figure of Amitabha Buddha. The figure is gilded and the base is sealed with a plate inscribed with a double vajra.
12½ in. (31.8 cm.) high
