A TRANSPARENT RED GLASS SHALLOW CIRCULAR COVERED BOX
18TH CENTURY
The top of the cover is carved in relief with two chilong crawling within a bow-string border at the edge, above a band of alternating detached C-scrolls and bosses around the sides. The flame-red color of the glass shades to yellow at the rim of the cover.

A pair of similar covered boxes was sold at Christie's New York, 4 June 1992, lot 34. The shape and design of confronted chilong on the cover of this glass box may have been derived from earlier lacquer or cloisonné enamel prototypes, such as the examples illustrated by Bèatrice Quette (ed.) in Cloisonné: Chinese Enamels from the Yuan, Ming and Qing Dynasties, New York, 2011, p. 34, fig. 3.6., a cloisonné box dated Yuan or early Ming dynasty, and fig. 3.7, a lacquer box dated Southern Song dynasty.
