A FINELY CARVED WHITE JADE SNUFF BOTTLE
PROBABLY IMPERIAL, ATTRIBUTED TO THE PALACE WORKSHOPS, BEIJING, 1700-1800
The tapering bottle is of lobed profile, and is carved on one convex side with a flowering prunus branch above chrysanthemum, and on the reverse with a four-character inscription in relief reading mei shou chang chun ('longevity and eternal spring'). The stone is of even white color, and softly polished.
2½ in. (6.3 cm.) high, blue stone stopper

By repute, a gift from the Dowager Empress to a French family, late 19th/early 20th century.

This well-carved bottle is attributable to the Palace Workshops on the strength of the lipped rim, the refined style of carving and superb finish, auspicious subject matter (expressing a wish for longevity and appropriate for a birthday gift) and the fine quality of the stone.
A white jade bottle with similar horizontal lobing on the narrow sides, but of oval shape, is illustrated in Snuff Bottles in the Collection of the National Palace Museum, Taipei, 1991, p. 168, no. 170.
