A MUGHAL GOLD AND 'JEWEL'-INLAID GREENISH-WHITE JADE HORSE HEAD-HILTED DAGGER
18TH-19TH CENTURY
The hilt is well carved as a horse head with the mane swept to one side, the eyes, flared nostrils, and harness inlaid in gold wire and 'rubies' as are the petals of the flowers on each side above the acanthus leaf-carved, curved guard, with further branching foliate decoration on the scrolled end which is drilled and carved for the insertion of the single-edged steel blade. The finely polished jade is of attractive greenish-white tone that shades to grey-green on the head. The scabbard is covered in silver-thread brocade and has pierced foliate scroll silver-gilt mounts.
16 5/8 in. (42.2 cm.) long, lucite stand
