Each bowl is decorated around the sides with flower-filled cell diaper pattern interrupted by a red ruyi border before continuing onto the flat base. The everted rim is shaped as eight petals and decorated on top with hibiscus sprays repeated on the domed cover below four red and pink bats descending from further foliate motifs and ruyi heads that surround the gilded bud-form finial. The interior is gilded and there is a separate gilded liner.

The cell diaper on the sides and bottoms of the bowls is similar to that seen on several pieces dated to the first half of the 18th century, or Qianlong period, illustrated by H. Brinker and A. Lutz in Chinese Cloisonné: The Pierre Uldry Collection, The Asia Society Galleries, New York, 1989, nos. 238, 241 and 242. On the first two, a qautrefoil basin and a stand, the diaper pattern forms part of the decoration, while on no. 242, a fangding and cover with a Qianlong mark, it forms all of the decoration.
