This profusely illustrated manuscript is a wonderful example of the heights of Kashmiri painting of the early 19th century. The facial features of many of the figures, in particular the eyes, are delicately outlined in red which contrasts with the pale facial pigment. This feature is mirrored in another copy of the Khamsa formerly in the Nasli M. Heeramaneck Collection and now in the Los Angeles County Musuem of Art that is also attributed to 19th century Kashmir (Pratapaditya Pal, The Arts of Kashmir, Asia Society 2007, Fig. 200, p. 182).
