Opaque pigments heightened with gold on paper, the saint seats on a marble low chair, he wears a green turban and green robes, his head with a gold nimbus, two angels fly above his head, identified in red nasta’liq script ‘Mahbub Subhani’, with red borders, back with metal-thread woven cloth

Mahbub Subhani, as inscribed in red nasta’liq along the top of this painting, refers to ‘Abd al-Qadir Jilani, founder of the Qadiri order of Sufism. He was born in Jilan, south of the Caspian sea in Iran, in 1077-78 AD.
