Lot Essay

The scene on this Qajar tile panel is directly inspired from the famous murals in the Safavid palace of Chehel Sutun, Ispahan. These paintings depict rulers such as Shah Tahmasp and Shah 'Abbas II receiving foreign dignitaries such as the Mughal emperor Humayun. Dancers and musicians entertain the rulers, as visible on the present piece.
