AN ATTIC BLACK-FIGURED AMPHORA
CIRCA LATE 6TH CENTURY B.C.
One side with the central figure of a maenad carrying two rhyta, flanked on either side with two apotropaic eyes, the other side with Herakles battling the Amazon queen Penthesilea, Herakles wearing the lion-skin draped over his head and body, carrying a sword in his right hand, the queen falling down on one knee, carrying a pelta-shaped shield and spear, wearing a high crested helmet, Herakles's companion to the right, carrying a round shield and spear, wearing a crested helmet and cloak, double palmettes around the neck, tongues on the shoulder, rays around the foot, details in added red and white
