Iakkhos was the son of Demeter and was the torch-bearing leader of the Eleusinian Mysteries. The mysteries were held annually at Eleusis for Demeter and Persephone. They related to the myth of Persephone's abduction to the underworld by Hades and Demeter's subsequent search for her daughter and her rise back to the world. Initiates into these secret rites would sweep bakhoi (large branches) along the Sacred Way from Athens to Eleusis.
