This 'Japonisme’ torchère is attributed to Edouard Lièvre based on its stylistic similarity to other bronze works of art that feature bamboo stems, and entwined trailing foliage and dragons. Their number include a table support conceived by Lièvre, and produced by Barbedienne in circa 1875, which features similar bronze dragons climbing bamboo stems that comprise the support, now in the Musée des Arts Décoratifs, Paris, and a guèridon with cloisonné table-top of the same date with small bronze animalistic figures climbing a bamboo stem support, again designed by Lièvre, and made by Barbedienne (D. Alcouffe, Connaissance des Arts, Edouard Lièvre, Paris, 2004, no. 228, pp. 3, 20 and 21). Vases japonais retailed by L’Escalier de Cristal also introduce skeletal angular mounts entwined with comparable foliage, and cherry blossom (ibid., p. 8).
