Versions of these wonderfully animated statues of children were exhibited by Pereda at the Philadelphia Centennial Exhibition in 1876. Raimondo Pereda was born in Lugano and studied at the Accademia de Brera in Milan. He exhibited in Munich from 1870 to 1884 and at the Paris Salon in 1879-80. His works were also shown in Parma and London, at the Philadelphia Centennial Exhibition in 1876 and at the 1889 Paris Exposition universelle.
