Marcel André Bouraine (1886 - 1948) was born in Pontoise and practised as a self-taught artist before he was imprisoned during the First World War by the Axis powers in Switzerland, where he produced several monuments during his internment. After the war he specialized in small-scale art deco figures of women whilst showing his work at various Salons, including the Salon de la Société des Artistes Français and le Salon des Artistes Indépendants. He subsequently moved to Biot in the South of France where he continued to work on large scale monuments in addition to his statuettes. The female figure of this rare over-life-size terracotta also forms the centre of a fountain in Reynaldo-Hahn Square, Cannes, which Bouraine completed in 1931.
