Lot Essay

A closely related Agra, but of much larger size, is illustrated in Murray L. Eiland Jr. and Murray Eiland III, Oriental Carpets, A Complete Guide, Toronto, 1998, fig.298, p.297. Another very similar Agra to the present carpet was sold at Sotheby's London, 17 April 2007, lot 109. All three carpets include the particularly charming details of a saddled horse and foal and confronting goats in all four corners. For a discussion of the revival of Indian carpet weaving in the second half of the 19th century, see lot 49 in present sale.
