Matthäus Funk (1697-1783) was one of the most celebrated cabinet-makers from the German-speaking regions. In 1706 his family moved from Frankfurt to Bern, Switzerland. With his four brothers, Johann Friedrich (a carver and sculptor), Johann Peter (a gilder), Johann Lorenz (a locksmith), Sigmund Emanuel (a dealer) and his son Daniel Beat Ludwig (a watchmaker), he established an atelier which soon became large and successful in Bern. It is assumed that together they manufactured entire interiors. The floral cartouches and leaves adorning the legs featured on the present console tables are common stylistic aspects of the sculptor Johann Friedrich Funk's work and can be seen on other examples by the craftsman.
