DELISLE, Guillaume (1675-1726). [Composite Atlas. Paris: 1700-1745.]

2° (530 x 395mm). 2pp. manuscript index, 76 double-page maps, some folding, by Delisle dated between 1700-1745, most hand-coloured in outline. (Lacking title-page, index and preliminary leaves lightly creased, first world map creased at gutter and with old marginal repair, 'Cartes des Indes et la Chine' with old paper reinforcement to versos of creasefolds, the two 'Theatrum Historicum' maps with additional letterpress side text highly defective and frayed, occasional light soiling and spotting.) Contemporary mottled calf, spine richly gilt in compartments, marbled-endpapers, red edges (extremities lightly rubbed, a few scuffs to covers). Provenance: Bibliotheque d'Hauteville (bookplate).

A FINE COMPOSITE ATLAS BY ONE OF THE GREATEST FRENCH CARTOGRAPHERS of the time of Louis XIV. Delisle was renowned for the precision of his maps and the veracity he demanded of the information they were to include. The atlas contains several important maps of the Americas: 'Hemisphere septentrionale' and 'Meridional' (both 1714); 'Carte du Canada ou de la nouvelle France' (1703); 'Amerique septentrionale' (1700); 'Carte du Mexique et de la Floride' and 'Carte du la terre ferme du Peron du Brazil, du Pays Amazones' (both 1703). A list of the maps is available on request.
