Each bowl with a calligraphic panel to the exterior and further panels on both the exterior and in the interior of figures alternating with gilt-ground panels of birds, butterflies and foliage, all reserved on a blue ground with scrolling Indian lotus.
15 ¾ in. (40 cm.) diam.

The nasta'liq inscriptions read: Zill-i Sultan sultan Mas'ud amir zadeh yamin al-dawla amjad arfa ashraf hazrat Sa'd farmayesh 1297 (ordered by Zill-i Sultan, sultan Mas'ud prince yamin al-dawla, most praiseworthy, most eminent, most noble, his lordship Sa'd, 1297).

Zill-i Sultan was the eldest son of Nasr al-Din Shah who was appointed Governor of Isfahan in 1874. A pair of very similar but smaller bowls was sold in Christie's New York, 21 - 25 January, 2010, lot 490.
