Johann Joseph Mildner (1763-1808) lived in Gutenbrunn in Austria and was one of the most inventive and creative decorators of glass of the period, specialising in portraiture and silver and gold inlay techniques. For a discussion of his work and a listing of known signed and dated pieces by him see Gustav E. Pazaurek and Eugen von Philippovich, Gläss der Empire- und Biedermeierzeit, Braunschweig, 1976, pp 297-326 and a similar portrait beaker is illustrated on p. 304, pl. 291. For other similarly decorated beakers see Rudolf von Strasser and Walter Spiegl, Dekoriertes Glas, Renaissance bis Biedermeier, Passau, 1989, pp. 346-347, nos. 245 & 246.
