Inscribed in ink on the reverse 'Portrait of Lieut-General / Sir James Leith G.C.B. / 3rd son of John Leith Esq / of Leith Hall in Aberdeenshire / born August 8th 1763. died October 10th 1816 / His daughter lived at 'The Lilies' with Lord and Lady Nugent from whom I / received this portrait by bequest to my wife / (sigd) [..].G.M.
