With head etched on each face with scrolling foliage against a stippled blackened ground, the axe-blade bearing the crossed staves of Burgundy impaling a coronet and dividing the cypher 'FAR', the head with open socket and four side-straps, on wooden haft, probably original, with two later blue wool tassels

Ferdinand I (1503-64), grandson of Emperor Maximilian I, succeeded to the Imperial crown in 1558 on the abdication of his elder brother, Charles V. He held the titles of Archduke of Austria from 1521, King of Bohemia, Hungary and Croatia from 1526, and King of the Romans from 1531.
