A FINE NORTH ITALIAN SWEPT-HILT RAPIER WITH GILT HILT
LATE 16TH / EARLY 17TH CENTURY
With long slender double-edged blade, iron hilt of flattened bars decorated to the outer side with spiral fluting filled with oval bands and punched dots, the fluted pommel chiselled with flowering foliage, each retaining much original gilding, and later copper wire-bound grip with Turk's heads
46 1/2 in. (118 cm.) blade
The blade marked at the ricasso with a crowned 'S' maker's mark and signed 'Caino' on each side, an inscription stamped within the fuller on each side
