CHARLES ROBERT DARWIN (1809-1882) AND FAMILY
[Photograph album. Down, Kent: 1879]. 8° (153 x 118mm). 19 original photographs (the majority 84 x 50mm). (Very occasional fading to photographs, two photographs on first leaf creased, the mounts torn in places.) Contemporary brown leather over thick boards with bevelled edges, clasp, gilt edges (worn, with most of backstrip detached). Provenance: R[ichard] B[uckley] Litchfield (ink presentation inscription dated 17 November 1879 to:) -- Anne Griffiths.
A RARE DARWIN FAMILY PHOTOGRAPH ALBUM, GIVEN BY CHARLES DARWIN’S SON-IN-LAW, RICHARD BUCKLEY LITCHFIELD, including photographs of Charles and of Emma Darwin (1808-1896); their daughter Henrietta Emma ‘Etty’ Litchfield (1843-1927), dated 31 August 1871, with another two apparently of Henrietta; and her husband Richard Buckley Litchfield (1832-193), dated October 1879, with another apparently of Richard, dated Oct 1879; George Howard Darwin (1845-1912), along with another apparently showing George holding an infant; and 10 others of unidentified sitters.
Litchfield married Henrietta Darwin in 1871; in him, she had found a man who shared some of her father’s zeal for social reform. Although a trained barrister, he took a junior position in the Ecclesiastical Commission to provide a basic income to support him in his work at the philanthropic Working Men’s College where he taught mathematics and singing, before becoming its principal.
