J.H. HUGHES
Map of the Northern Located Portion of Van Diemen's Land. Hobarton: April 1837. Folding hand-coloured lithographic map (1063 x 1143mm), to the scale of 1 inch to 2 miles (1: 126,720), dissected and mounted on linen (very minor marginal repaired tear just touching scale), contained in the original linen-covered slipcase, large lithographic title on paper label pasted on one side (lightly stained and frayed at edges). Provenance: minor contemporary pencil annotation regarding sections of land near Lake Sorell and Lake Crescent in southern central portion of map.
VERY RARE MAP OF NORTHERN TASMANIA. Although we have not been able to discover any information regarding J.H. Hughes, it seems likely that he was one of Frankland's surveyors, and this map, which clearly delineates land claim boundaries, must have been used to settle land disputes. ONLY ONE RECORD OF THIS MAP SELLING AT AUCTION CAN BE TRACED (Christie's Australia, Oct 14, 1975, lot 1004; ABPC/AE-online); AND ONLY ONE COPY CAN BE TRACED IN AN INSTITUTION (State Library of Tasmania).
