Title, passport granted by the Ottoman Sultan, privilege, wood-engraved folding plan of Constantinople. (Map lightly creased at fore-edge just into image, faint browning and occasional insignificant spotting.) Contemporary mottled calf, gilt spine, marble-paper pastedowns, decorated edges (extremities lightly rubbed, more heavily to headcap, joints with very short splits).
FIRST EDITION OF FAUVEL’S ACCOUNT OF THE LEVANT containing a folding map of Constantinople not included in following editions. Fauvel, Fermanel and Baudouin, from Rouen, together with the Belgian Stochove, spent two years in the Levant (1630-1632), exploring in detail the Greek Islands and the coast of Asia Minor. This work is more a compendium of geographical, religious and social observations than a narrative of the voyage. Atabey 417 (not calling for the map); Blackmer 576 (second edition).
