With half-title. 25 etched and aquatint plates by Benedikt Piringer after Michel-François Préault, 4 of these double-page. (Damp stain in the top margins, title and text leaves with scattered spotting, plates margins with faint damp staining and scattered spotting, one plate with an area of browning in the engraving, a few short marginal tears.) Contemporary blue quarter roan over marbled boards, flat spine tooled and lettered in gilt (extremities rubbed, sides scuffed, hinges split but holding, front endpaper creased). Provenance: Georgios Zariphis (1810-1884, financier; bookplate).

FIRST EDITION of this collection of fine views of Istanbul and scenes along the Bosporus. The Zariphis copy. This atlas volume was published separately two years after the three octavo volumes of text. The plates are after Préault, 'an architect who had travelled to Constantinople in 1796 with a French company of engineers engaged to construct new army and navy barracks... The drawings he produced for Pertusier, engraved by Piringer, are among his finest' (Blackmer). Atabey 941; Blackmer 1292 ('of some rarity'); Brunet IV, 523-524; Koç 204a.
