PRINCE MAXIMILIAN ZU WIED-NEUWIED (1782-1867)

Voyage au Brésil dans les années 1815, 1816 et 1817. Paris: Arthus Bertrand, 1821-1822. 4 volumes comprising: 3 8° text vols (219 x 135mm) and 2° atlas volume (535 x 385mm). Half-titles to text vols; atlas with letterpress title, list of plates, 2 large folding maps hand-coloured in outline, one other engraved map, 21 full-page plates, including 5 hand-coloured, and 20 further plates on 10 sheets, all printed on papier vélin. (Very occasional spotting to text; title-page of atlas vol. lightly spotted, top- and left-hand-edge of plates with minor tears, some light dust soiling to edges.) Text in original publisher's pink wrappers, with original printed paper label to each flat spine, edges uncut, largely unopened (text with some light rubbing to extremities); atlas with plates loose as issued in the original livraisons complete with publisher's blue (vol. I) and pink (vol. II) printed paper labels to upper wrapper of each, these annotated in a contemporary hand 'velin', the two fascicules within a contemporary portfolio with publisher's printed label pasted to upper cover; all 4 vols preserved within a modern blue morocco-backed drop-back box in the French style, with spine lettered in gilt (extremities of text vols very lightly rubbed; atlas portfolio rubbed at extremities). Provenance: ms. note in a 19th-century hand giving details of the price and limitation of copies printed on papier vélin.

FIRST FRENCH EDITION: ONE OF 12 COPIES WITH THE PLATES ON PAPIER VÉLIN, THE TEXT IN ORIGINAL WRAPPERS. The plates for this edition were taken directly from the original German edition, and are found here printed on papier vélin without the severe spotting that is normally associated with the first edition. 'From a scientific point of view this expedition was one the most profitable of the nineteenth century... The account of this journey is a classic work' (Borba de Moraes). Sabin 47023; Borba de Moraes II, p.545; Garraux p.192; Palau, 375145.
