JOSEPH DICKINSON (1701-1739)
A Map of the Manor of Warmsworth in the West Riding of the County of York, surveyed anno 1726 and now drawn for the use of John Battie Esq, according to the regulation since made by Jos. Dickinson, 1737. Manuscript estate plan, ink and wash on glazed linen. (Some slight discolouration.) 720 x 940mm. Provenance: Battie-Wrightson archive, part of Cusworth Hall Estate, Doncaster.
A finely decorated 18th-century English estate plan by Joseph Dickinson, a member of the prominent 18th-century Yorkshire family of surveyors. The plan encompasses an area south of the River Dunn, the largest fields are divided into narrow strips, coloured in either turquoise or yellow, and keyed to an inset table of tenants and free-holders, other border embellishments are a decorative floral cartouche, scale-bar and dividers, compass rose, and the arms of John Battie signed by William Dickinson, all within a double rule in turquoise and yellow. To find such an early estate plan on linen is particularly unusual. Please note that the purchaser is obliged to notify the Royal Commission on Historical Documents of the acquisition and to provide details of where it will be kept. The plan may not be removed from England and Wales without the prior consent of the Master of the Rolls. Steer/Bendall D173.
