The makers William Old and John Oldy are recorded from circa 1723 until William Old's death in 1738, at which time his widow conducted a sale of his stock from the St. Paul's Churchyard address denoted in the label. A very similar labeled example of similar form, but with flat cornice and bracket feet, is illustrated in C. Gilbert, A Pictorial Dictionary of Marked London Furniture 1700-1840, Leeds, 1986, fig. 600, and later sold Christie's, New York, 18 October 2001, lot 266.
