Lot Essay

For another version of this subject by Hildebrandt, of similar size, see G. Ferrez, O Brasil de Eduard Hildebrandt, Rio de Janerio, [nd], p.42, kat.28 (... Hildebrant's original works painted in 1844 as souvenirs of Prince Adalbert's visit to Brazil, commissioned by the Prussian King Frederick William IV, are now in the Nationalgalerie, Berlin. The artist appears to have produced copies of the works painted in Brazil following his return to Germany in 1845. See for example the watercolours sold in these rooms 10 October 2013, lot 188 (Ilha Boa Viagem, Rio de Janeiro dated 1845), and 29 April 1999, lot 24 (Rua do Ouvidor, Rio de Janeiro).
