Both van de Veldes frequently reproduced their own work by means of secondary versions, sometimes identical but usually with minor variations. Six variants of this composition, English ships with sails loosed, are listed in M.S. Robinson's magisterial catalogue raisonné, The Paintings of the Willem van de Veldes, the majority of which were thought to be versions by other artists of the 17th and 18th centuries including Charles Brooking.
As there are no eighteenth century features in the ships or vessels in this previously unknown work, usually introduced by Brooking when copying a seventeenth century picture by van de Velde II, it is possible that the flagship may be by the hand of van de Velde II, and likely that the rest of the composition is by the hand of a talented man in the studio such as Cornelis van de Velde, under the direction of the master.
