Lot Essay

Born in 1757, created a baronet in 1796 and baron in 1814, Admiral Sir Edward Pellew's arms were augmented in allusion to his naval exploits. This crest depicts the wreck of the East Indiaman 'Dutton', whose troops and crew he saved off a rocky shore on the Plymouth Garrison. In recognition of his later destruction of the fleet and arsenal of Algiers, Pellew was advanced to a viscounty in 1816. He died in 1833, his illustrious naval career providing the basis for C.S. Forester's Hornblower stories.
