在朱新建笔下，无论英雄美人，还是山水花鸟，时而艳丽，时而讲究墨色浓淡。作品《放翁写梅》中艺术家以线条勾勒，笔墨的轻重缓急、干湿浓淡为心绪的载体，错落有序，尽显胸中气韵。
他对文人画有自己的定义,“文人画是通过毛笔把心灵感受的东西表达出来”。近花甲之年，如效仿“一树梅花一放翁”的孤傲心境般，艺术家引晚唐诗人的词来倾诉心中的情愫。
