James Daniell, the publisher and mezzotint engraver bought a series of pictures from Northcote in 1799-1801, the present picture being the most expensive, for which he paid 30 guineas on the 10th March 1801. The other pictures were the “Lion in Love”, “Vulture and Lamb”, “Tiger and Crocodile” and “Eagle, Fox and Pheasant” (numbers 350-353 in the Account Book).
