Lot Essay

The full-rigged ship Concordia was built in Nova Scotia in 1855 for the firm of J. Wishart of St. John, New Brunswick. Originally registered at 1,030 tons, she measured 177 feet in length with a 36 foot beam, and was intended for the North Atlantic trade into Liverpool. In 1858 she was sold to the prestigious Liverpool merchant house of Rathbone brothers but continued on the Liverpool. At first they traded her to Quebec but in 1867, having changed her home port to Newcastle, they started running her from the Tyneside ports to the Mediterranean, a route she continued until 1874 when she was deleted from Lloyd's Registers without explanation. Untraced after that date, it must therefore be presumed that she was either lost or broken up.
