Blue half morocco gilt preserving original cloth covers in 1850 and original buff paper wrappers in 1851 and 1852 (slight soiling on covers to first vol., front cover to final vol. slightly soiled, rear cover torn at inside edge with piece missing but not affecting wording). Provenance: Robert Stratten Holmes Liverpool 21.4.[18]87 (inscription on title to 5th edition). THIRD TO FIFTH EDITIONS. The altered title was no doubt intended to make the Guide appeal to a broader market. The 1850 third edition and 1851 fourth edition are both dated on the title page, and likewise on the front cover or wrapper; additionally, the wrapper to 1851 identifies it as the fourth edition. The 1852 fifth edition is not dated on the title, but is described as the ‘Guide …. for 1852’ and ‘fifth edition’ on the wrapper.
