WISDEN, John. Cricketers' Almanack for 1905, edited by Sydney H. Pardon. London: John Wisden and Co., 1905. 8° (161 x 100mm). Mounted photographic plate. Original publisher’s hardback cloth, lettered in gilt on upper cover and spine, original printed yellow wrappers used as endpapers (front cover a little soiled).
TENTH HARDBACK EDITION, forty-second in the series. B.J.T. Boasanquet gives his ‘impressions’ of the MCC tour in Australia. The South Africans, who had toured England without playing any Test matches, are regarded as ‘a hard wicket side …. The batsmen did not like slow wickets and the bowlers were in proportion much better when the ground was lively than when it had been affected by rain.’ An unusual feature is ‘Record Bats’ on pp. xxx-xxxi. This lists ‘Bats, Prices and Buyers’ in an auction sale for the Cricketers’ Benevolent Fund. Bats owned by W.G. Grace, Trumper, Ranji, Jessop and Shrewsbury make the largest sums.
