LATHAM, Simon. Falconry. London: Roger Jackson, 1614-1618. 2 parts in one volume, small 4° (176 x 134mm). First part with woodcut of falcon on title, title to second part within woodcut border containing ten blocks, woodcut illustrations at beginning of each chapter, elaborate woodcut initials and head- and tail-pieces. (Final leaf with some marginal repairs just touching a few letters, some soiling, light staining and browning.) Contemporary calf with blind-stamp decoration and gilt spine (rebacked and recornered preserving old spine, some rubbing). Provenance: G. Thomas (inscription) -- Freeman-Thomas (bookplate).
FIRST EDITION OF ONE OF THE ‘PRINCIPAL BOOKS ON HAWKING IN THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE’ (Schwerdt). The 1614 edition of the first part is VERY RARE: until the Britwell sale of 1925 the 1615 edition was believed to be the first edition. Only one copy of the 1614 edition is recorded at auction on ABPC/AE online. Harting 18-19; Schwerdt I, p. 302; Souhart 285.
